Gourmet Getaway

Fantastic food accompanied by great wine is one of Australia’s South West’s true pleasures. Spanning six distinctive wine regions enjoy a day tasting wine at a beautiful winery, followed by a gourmet lunch at a vineyard restaurant and finish off with a visit to a boutique brewery. Along the way, take the time to sample wonderful cheeses, olives, olive oils, marron, delicious chocolate, fudge and so much more fresh from the producers at boutique shops, cellar doors, farmers markets and farm gate stalls. Please note this itinerary can be reversed starting in the Geographe Wine Region to the Great Southern (Frankland River and Mt Barker) before returning to Perth.

  • Day 1: Perth to Albany

    Travel: 417km

    Fast track to the Great Southern Wine Region, one of Australia’s fastest growing wine areas. Sample the cool climate wine at the Frankland River wineries and continue on to Mount Barker. From here it’s a picturesque drive through to the Porongurup Range which provides a grand backdrop to a variety of wineries. Overnight here or drive on to Albany for a delicious dinner and accommodation in town. In Albany, visit the Oyster House Albany with a bottle of Great Southern Riesling and sample delicious fresh oysters straight from the water’s edge.

  • Day 2/3: Albany to Denmark

    Travel: 54.6km

    Follow the stunning southern coastline to Denmark where wineries are dotted along the Scotsdale Tourist Drive. Take a drive on the Mount Shadforth Scenic Drive and visit one of Denmark’s highly acclaimed wineries for a tasting followed a gourmet meal made from the local produce. Along the way make sure to stop and sample cheeses, chocolates and locally made jams. End your day here with delightful premium wine tastings at beautiful vineyards and then enjoy a relaxing night.

  • Day 4: Denmark to Manjimup

    Travel: 185km

    From Denmark, drive west along the South Coast Hwy through the Walpole Wilderness area and stop off to visit the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. Drive north to Pemberton where karri tree forests form a stunning backdrop to many wineries. Try local fare such as marron and trout. Head north to Manjimup visiting boutique wineries nestled in magnificent forests and beautiful countryside. Manjimup is home to the famous black truffle, be sure to try this taste sensation.

  • Day 5: Manjimup to Margaret River

    Travel:  161km

    Journey back through the Blackwood River Valley and try some local wine and cider made from the local fruit at Bridgetown. Take some of the most scenic drives in the region through rolling hills and valleys as you take the journey through Nannup. Make a stop at the Cambray Sheep Cheese and sample their farmhouse cheeses. Take a bottle of wine along and indulge in one of their cheese platters. From Nannup travel on to the Margaret River Wine Region. Internationally known for its cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, sample world renowned wines at a couple of the largest wineries including Leeuwin Estate just south of the Margaret River Township. Spend the night in the town of Margaret River and enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants which feature the local produce.

  • Day 6: Margaret River to Busselton

    Travel: 60.4km

    Browse through the boutique shops before you begin your day exploring the Margaret River Wine Region. Grab a map from the local visitor centre and get ready to enjoy Margaret River’s world famous wines, wonderful cheeses, chocolates, olive oil, fudge, boutique beers, natural soaps, art galleries and boutique shopping. Drive yourself or hop on board one of the many tour companies who will do the driving for you. Head north and visit the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and enjoy a swim, snorkel or kayak in the crystal waters of Geographe Bay. Along the way stop off at various vantage points along the coast and watch the world class waves come rolling in. Spend the night in Busselton.

  • Day 7: Busselton to Bunbury

    Travel: 172km

    Head north and travel through Busselton. Visit the famous Busselton Jetty, catch the train or walk to the end and see the amazing marine life from the underwater observatory. Take a detour through Capel and head to Donnybrook which is a great place to try local fruit cider and fruit wines. Drive north towards the outskirts of Bunbury to Dardanup and discover the Ferguson Valley. Ferguson Valley is one of Australia’s newest and fast growing wine regions with boutique wineries and breweries dotted along the rolling hills. Stay overnight in Bunbury or travel on to Perth. On your way back to Perth, stop off in Harvey to enjoy the wines in the Geographe region.

  • Day 8: Bunbury to Perth

    Take a scenic drive to the Wellington National Park and visit Honeymoon Pool. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy in the beautiful surroundings next to the Collie River. Next head north along the South Western Highway and visit the quaint country town of Harvey to try some of the local wine before venturing back to Perth.

*Bremer Bay and Fitzgerald River National Park

Extend your journey east with a trip to Bremer Bay and Fitzgerald River National Park. This route will also take you further east to Esperance in Australia’s Golden Outback.

Bremer Bay

Spectacular beaches and a variety of activities including swimming, surfing, sand boarding, snorkelling, diving and four wheel driving will keep visitors occupied in this fishing holiday town. Whales rest in the calm waters from July to November with dolphins frequently spotted.

Fitzgerald River National Park

Recognised as an international biosphere reserve, this park has more than 1,800 beautiful and bizarre species of flowering plants as well as myriads of lichens, mosses and fungi. Explore the wilderness or journey to Point Ann where southern right whales arrive each year from July to November to calve. This whale nursery is 65km east of Bremer Bay and it is not unusual to see up to 40 whales at a time.
